Maamigili sits on the edge of a wide channel inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area. Deep water sits minutes from shore, and that depth carries a steady supply of plankton past the reef edge in every season. Coral spawning in Belize, plankton blooms in Western Australia, monsoon upwellings elsewhere: all seasonal. South Ari runs year-round.
The result is a resident population, not a visiting one. More than 726 individual whale sharks have been catalogued here since 2006 by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. Each is identified by a spot pattern as unique as a fingerprint. They range from 5.5 to 10 metres and can weigh over 20 tonnes. They are the largest fish in the sea, and they are endangered.
The only place the season never closes
If you book Exmouth in November or Placencia in September, you are travelling outside the window. Book Maamigili in any month, and the whale sharks are still here.

The shark does not stop for you
It moves at its own pace, mouth open, filtering plankton. Your job is to stay beside it, never above, never in its path. Most encounters last three to eight minutes before the shark dives or moves on. Some guests see one. Some see three.

We leave Maamigili harbour on our own speedboat with a small group, typically six to ten guests.
Read the water
The crew reads surface signs, bird activity and current. When a shark is found, we position ahead of its path and enter calmly, one group at a time.
Back by noon
Three to four hours on the water. Snorkel gear, GoPro footage and drinking water are included; the shark moves at its own pace, and so do we.
Encounter etiquette
Whale sharks here are wild animals in a protected marine area, studied by the MWSRP. Responsible operators follow simple rules, because the species is endangered, and each individual matters.
- Keep a respectful distance. Never touch or chase.
- Stay beside the animal, never above or in front of its path.
- No flash photography; it can startle the shark.
- Move calmly. Sudden movements and splashing cause stress.
- If the shark dives or moves away, let it go.
Realistic expectations
Whale sharks are wild. No operator anywhere can guarantee a sighting on a specific morning. What we can tell you: on most mornings the crew finds a shark, and across the year better than nine trips in ten meet one. When the sea says no, we say so and go again the next day.
What we can say with confidence: they are resident year-round. Spend two or three mornings on the water and the odds of meeting at least one are high. The ocean is not a theme park, and we would rather tell you so.

Can you see whale sharks from the beach at Maamigili?
Occasionally. Whale sharks feed near the surface in the channel, and on calm days you may spot a dark shape from shore. But reliable encounters happen on guided boat trips to the feeding grounds. The beach alone is not enough.
Is it safe to swim near whale sharks?
Yes. Whale sharks are filter feeders that eat plankton and small fish. They are not predatory toward humans and have a docile temperament. Stay calm, follow your guide, and never try to touch or ride the animal.
What is the best month for whale sharks in the Maldives?
Every month works, because South Ari Atoll has year-round residency. For clearer water, January to April is calmer and drier. For more active feeding, May to August brings higher plankton levels. There is no wrong month.
How much does a whale shark tour cost?

How long is a whale shark excursion?
Most trips last three to four hours. Boats depart around 8:00 AM and return by noon. Time in the water with a whale shark varies from a few minutes to longer if the animal is feeding at the surface.
Can children swim with whale sharks?
Yes. Whale sharks are gentle and the encounters are calm. Children who are comfortable snorkelling can take part; our guides adjust the pace for younger swimmers and keep groups small.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Basic snorkelling ability is enough. You will be in open water, so comfort floating on the surface matters. Life jackets are available. If you cannot swim at all, speak to our crew before booking; we can often accommodate non-swimmers with flotation support.
