Maamigili is a living local island of 2,798 people in South Ari Atoll, 107 km southwest of Malé. It has its own airport, a working harbour, and it sits inside the only waters on Earth where whale sharks reside year-round.
Land, drop your bag, be with a whale shark before lunch
This is what sets Maamigili apart. Villa International Airport (VAM) sits on the southern edge of the island, with an 1,800-metre runway. Domestic flights from Malé take about 20 minutes.
Other whale shark islands, including Dhigurah in the same atoll, need a speedboat transfer of 90 minutes or more from Malé. Maamigili's own airport means you can land, collect your bag, and be on the water the same morning you arrive. For a trip built around wildlife encounters, that extra time in the water matters.
The channel that shaped the island brought the kings
Maamigili is naturally round, which is unusual for a Maldivian island, because it sits on the edge of a wide channel. That channel funnels nutrient-rich water from the deep ocean toward the reef, and the whale sharks follow the food. It is not a seasonal migration; the sharks live here full-time, as long as researchers have been tracking them.

One flat, paved street runs east to west: shops and cafes at the eastern end, then the mosque, medical centre, school and council offices, walkable end to end in about fifteen minutes. Transport is roughly six taxis and three pickups; most guests walk. The deep-water harbour on the north side is a working one, busy at dawn with tuna boats.
Guests describe it as “the real Maldivian life.” The island moves at its own pace. Shops open when owners arrive, the call to prayer marks the hours, and children walk to school along the path you take to the beach. There is no performance here. You are welcome to be part of a community going about its day.
