We did not choose the name for royal lineage. We chose it because the story of Koimala is a story about arrival and belonging: a stranger who came to these islands, earned the trust of the people who lived here, and built something that lasted. That is what we try to do with every guest who walks through our door.
The Maldives is 1,200 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. For centuries they had no single ruler. Then came Koimala, a prince from beyond the atolls who united them, reigning from 1121 to 1141 over a kingdom called Malikaddu dhemedhu: all that lies between the northernmost and southernmost atolls.
Today another king rules these waters: the whale shark, resident off Maamigili's reef every day of the year, found in permanent residence nowhere else on Earth. Stay with us and you meet both: the legend beneath the surface, and the island welcome that once convinced a sea-prince to stay forever.
The family behind Koimala has roots on Maamigili going back generations. When they built the guesthouse, they wanted a name that carried weight, one that connected the building to the history of these islands. King Koimala represented unity, hospitality, and the idea that a place is made stronger by the people who arrive at its shore.
Twelve rooms. Not a resort, and it was never meant to be one. A clean room, food cooked fresh every day, and a crew that knows the ocean well enough to put you in front of a whale shark within hours of arrival. The king's lesson was that hospitality is about making someone feel they belong.

The whale sharks of South Ari live inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). Every excursion operates within its guidelines: calm approaches, no touching, no flash photography, respectful distance.
We support the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, which has catalogued over 726 individuals since 2006, the research that confirmed the year-round residency that makes Maamigili unique. Some of these sharks have been identified by their spot patterns since before this guesthouse existed. The population is classified as endangered by the IUCN. Protecting them is the condition that lets this place keep working.
